Proper preparation of your quilt top and back is essential to a good result. Please read the following instructions carefully.

Preparing Your Quilt Top

  • Trim and square your quilt to desired size

  • Trim loose threads

  • Press all seams flat either to one side or flat

  • Remove all pins. Do not baste your quilt layers together

  • If your quilt does not have borders, and has many seams around the edge, please baste a 1/8" stitch around the outer edge

  • Mark the top of your quilt with a safety pinned note

  • Measure your quilt top and enter the length and width in the intake form

Preparing Your Quilt Back

  • Remove selvages from your backing

  • Measure and ensure the backing is 8" wider and 8" longer than quilt top

  • Press backing fabric

  • Square backing fabric

  • Mark the top of your backing fabric with a safety pinned note

Note: If your backing is pieced, use a 1/2” seam pressed to open to create less bulk in your backing when quilted

Borders

PLEASE NOTE: BORDERS THAT DO NOT LAY FLAT MAY PUCKER OR BE PLEATED WHEN LONGARM QUILTED.

  • Before adding borders check to see if piecing the blocks has left a square quilt.  To check squareness: Fold in half lengthwise then widthwise.

    • Does it lay flat and are sides even? Trim ends or adjust your seams if needed.

    • Quilt can be a rectangle, ensure angles are 90 degrees

  • After adding borders, check to ensure borders are square and quilt lies flat and sides are even

Shipping

  • To avoid moisture and damage, pack your quilt top and backing in a waterproof bag

  • Place the bag in a sturdy cardboard box

  • Tape your box well

  • Do not label "quilt" anywhere on the outside of the box to protect from theft

Note: If you are local to Manassas, Virginia, I accept quilt drop-offs by appointment only.
